About

Who am I?

MY BACKGROUND & TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My teaching philosophy centres around the belief that experiential, place-based learning is key to developing well-rounded students. I strongly advocate for play-based and land-based learning as it fosters deeper engagement and helps students create meaning, make connections across disciplines, and grow as innovative thinkers. Furthermore, it aligns with my commitment to integrating First Nations, Métis, and Inuit perspectives into my lessons, ensuring that all students develop an appreciation and respect for Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing. By fostering self-motivated, caring, and cross-curricular learners, I aim to cultivate students who are equipped to contribute thoughtfully to their communities. It all begins by building authentic relationships with my students. This practice is the base on which my teaching practice stands. I believe in creating a trusting classroom community where students feel safe, comfortable, and valued as this supports their wellbeing and enables me to understand their individual learning needs and provide tailored support. Students should always come first, and I aim to foster an inclusive, engaging classroom where all students can thrive.

I bring an extensive background in the education field, including my roles as an Education Assistant with the CBE, a volunteer for Teachers Across Borders in Madrid, and a tutor. Furthermore, my background in sports (such as the University of Calgary Cheer Team), performing arts (dance), and music (guitar, voice, violin, and ukulele), allow me to integrate creativity into my lessons.

Wellness

As an educator, maintaining a healthy balance is imperative to long-term wellness and career success. In order to make a positive impact in the classroom, I have to be mindful of my own physical and mental wellbeing.

Teaching is an emotional and difficult profession. During difficult days, I reflect on why I am a teacher. I enjoy making a difference in students' lives, both academically and emotionally. As an Early Childhood specialist, I understand the profound impact early years teachers have on development. This is what keeps me motivated. My desire to make a positive impact on my students is what gets me going every morning. I also I make time to connect with other staff in the building. In my field experiences, I have observed how teaching staff support each other during breaks. Integrating into the school community is another way I choose to promote wellness. Knowing that colleagues are there to support me mitigates the effects of stress.

Everyday, I find a reason to smile. I am passionate about this profession and it is the little moments that make my day. I cherish moments throughout my day and mentally keep track. I remember the moments when students are thoughtful or makes strides in their learning. I keep physical proofs of these in my reflection journal and around my desk. For example, stickers students have given me, art they have created, or cards they wrote. Maintaining positive relationships with all of my students keeps my spirits high and is an essential motivating factor.

Having a healthy work-life balance plays the biggest role in my wellness. I have developed a healthy routine. Outside of my life as an educator, I stay active which keeps me physically well and allows me to connect with others. I am very passionate about university cheer and use this as a key part of my wellness strategy. Though my extra-curricular commitments keep me busy, I also prioritize rest. Building in relaxation time everyday after school hours prevents against stress and burnout. I also ensure I get at least 8 hours of sleep per night.
